Ready, Freddy- Ready,Set,Snow by Abby Kline
Freddy Thresher's class is having their very own Winter Olympics. When Freddy bets the class bully that he can beat him in the snowshoe race, he forgets one important thing- he has never used snowshoes in his life! Will Freddy fall flat on his face in front of the entire first grade?
This is a great book for beginning readers because students can easily relate to the problems that Freddy faces in this series. The book also helps young readers bridge the gap between picture books and chapter books because this book features plenty of illustrations. Ready, Set, Snow is a realistic fiction book. I would use this book as a springboard for a daily writing prompt. I will ask the class if their has ever been a time in their lives that they were nervous about something and to describe the situation and their feelings. Another assignment that my students could do is write a poem about a snow day.
